Musée d’Orsay & St. Germain Area
Thankfully I am up a little later today. It’s around 8:00 so I get a ready a little quicker. Today is Musée d’Orsay. I thought it was just about the Impressionist. It’s a large part but it covers everything between 1848 to 1914. Of course the paintings are exceptional but once again I was focused on the sculptures. I also found the Art Nouveau exceptional. I have always been a fan of Art Nouveau from posters and typography from my days in sign painting. What blew me away more about this movement was the room displays with the outlandish furniture. The rooms give you a much better appreciation for this art. Very cool how it works together in a room. I did by a book on understanding the paintings in the Orsay collection. Very helpful as it will take you through either chronologically or thematically. I have lunch at the museum and explore another section before heading outside. Outside I take in the sculptures that are on the grounds before heading over to Boulevard St. Germain. It’s Sunday so the shops are not open (thankfully) and the streets are not overly crowded. I make my way towards Eglise St. Germain des Pres (old church) where I stop for an espresso at The Deux Magots (famous former hangout of the literary) and do what Parisians do, people watch. If you seen one old church, why not another. Up the street is Eglise ST. Sulpice. It’s old. I start to head back towards the hotel. On my way I pick up a little momento form I shop that I visited at before. Not far from the hotel I take a walk through the Palais Royal and enjoy the garden walkway. Located here is the pillar sculpture garden. Kids are playing and climbing - being kids. And it is okay. I come out the other end and cross the street to stop into my now home boulangerie to pick up a sandwich for dinner. Back, I eat and collapse. My feet are tired. My new boots are getting well broken-in.
